I think that's just the general attitude of more sophisticated racing (i.e. not NASCAR). My first time to the Petit Le Mans a few years ago, I remember seeing a few members of one pit crew sharing tips with their neighbors, who were racing in the same class. At least I think they were. But either way, they were certainly not teammates.
